System Requirements
6 Steps to Freedom
Download KookVPN
Visit the download page and download the KookVPN installer for Windows. The file is approximately 50MB. No account creation is required before downloading.
- Compatible with Windows 10 (version 1903+) and Windows 11
- Requires 64-bit operating system
- Minimum 100MB free disk space
- 4GB RAM recommended (2GB minimum)
- Internet connection for initial setup
Run the Installer
Run the downloaded installer. Windows may show a SmartScreen warning because the app is not yet widely distributed -- click "More info" then "Run anyway". The installer takes about 60 seconds.
- The installer places KookVPN in your Program Files directory
- A desktop shortcut is created automatically
- The wintun.dll driver is installed for TUN mode support
- sing-box core binary is extracted to the application directory
- No browser extensions or system modifications beyond the TUN driver
If your antivirus flags the installer, add an exception for the KookVPN directory. The sing-box binary and wintun.dll driver are legitimate open-source components that some antivirus software may flag due to their network-level capabilities.
Launch as Administrator
Right-click the KookVPN shortcut and select "Run as administrator". Administrator privileges are required because TUN mode creates a virtual network adapter at the operating system level. This is what allows KookVPN to capture ALL traffic -- not just browser traffic.
- TUN mode requires admin privileges to create a virtual network adapter
- The app will prompt for elevation if not run as admin
- You can set "Run as administrator" permanently in the shortcut properties
- Without admin privileges, TUN mode will fail and the app cannot establish a secure connection
For convenience, right-click the shortcut > Properties > Compatibility > check "Run this program as an administrator". This eliminates the need to right-click every time.
Enter Your Credentials
After launching, enter the connection credentials provided in your welcome email. These include your VLESS UUID, server address, and Reality public key. If you purchased through our website, these are sent automatically after payment.
- Connection details are pre-configured in most cases
- Your VLESS UUID is your unique authentication token
- The Reality public key authenticates the server connection
- The short ID is an additional verification parameter
- All credentials are stored securely in your local system keyring
Click Connect
Click the large Connect button. KookVPN will establish a VLESS+Reality+Vision connection to the Singapore server. The connection typically completes in 2-5 seconds. The status indicator turns green when connected.
- A virtual network adapter (TUN) is created on first connection
- All OS-level traffic is routed through the encrypted tunnel
- DNS queries are encrypted via DNS-over-TLS
- Split routing activates automatically -- Chinese apps go direct
- The kill switch activates to prevent any leaks if the connection drops
Verify Your Connection
Open your browser and visit a geo-checking service or simply try loading google.com. If it loads, your VPN is working. For thorough verification, check your IP address -- it should show a Singapore IP from DigitalOcean, not your China ISP IP.
- Try loading google.com, youtube.com, or twitter.com
- Check your IP at a service like whatismyip.com
- Verify DNS is not leaking by checking dnsleaktest.com
- Test CLI tools: run "claude --version" or "curl api.openai.com"
- The system tray icon shows connection status at a glance
If anything does not work, see our troubleshooting guide or contact support.
Optimize Your Experience
Split Routing
KookVPN automatically routes Chinese apps (WeChat, Alipay, Taobao) directly while sending international traffic through the VPN. No configuration needed.
Kill Switch
The kill switch is enabled by default. If the VPN disconnects, all internet traffic is blocked until the connection is restored. Critical for protecting AI API access.
Auto-Reconnect
Auto-reconnect is enabled by default. If the connection drops momentarily (ISP hiccup, network switch), KookVPN reconnects automatically within seconds.
